ClearVPN is an impressive VPN solution from the minds at MacPaw. Despite being a relatively new product, the VPN has already garnered many fans due to the level of personalization it provides.

While MacPaw is known for creating products for macOS users, CleanVPN has dedicated apps for several platforms, including Windows and Android. The VPN effectively masks your real IP address, giving you more anonymity online, and helps users bypass geo-restrictions on the web.

The number of servers in ClearVPN's network is undisclosed, but the provider operates across 20+ countries, including the USA, the UK, Australia, and Canada, enabling you to access restricted content online. The provider uses shortcuts to connect people to the best servers, an approach that may seem foreign to some VPN users, but that actually makes your VPN experience more personalized.

There is a free version of the VPN available, and users can upgrade to one of the paid plans to enjoy more features. Subscription plans start from $4.58 per month, which is great value for money considering the level of VPN excellence you receive in return.

ClearVPN Security

85%

Regarding security, ClearVPN offers users a lot of advanced features so that they stay protected online. Firstly the provider employs military-grade AES-256 bit encryption with SHA-256 authentication and uses a 2048-bit key for handshake methods. AES-256 bit encryption is considered pretty much impenetrable, so it is no surprise that technology company McPaw uses this for its first VPN offering.

As well as the above, ClearVPN uses secure protocols to ensure users have the best possible data encryption level. The protocol options include IPSec, IKEv2, OpenVPN, and ClearVPN's very own custom protocol. The custom protocol provides extra security and encryption to users when they connect to ClearVPN's servers. However, it is worth noting that users can't choose which protocols their connection runs over in the settings, and this is automatically assigned depending on the shortcut you choose.

ClearVPN claims to have a strict no-logs policy, which it outlines on its privacy policy. The provider states, "We do not store connection timestamps, session information, used bandwidth, traffic logs, IP addresses, or other data."

However, that isn't to say that the provider doesn't log anything. On the privacy policy, ClearVPN states that it collects (with its users' permission) information, including device IDs, diagnostic information about successful and unsuccessful connection attempts, connection type, network information, and the country you're connecting from by using your IP address. It's worth keeping this in mind when you sign up for the service.

So, what else does ClearVPN offer in terms of security? Firstly, the VPN is DNS leakproof. We ran a DNS leak test and were pleased to note that the VPN did not leak our real IP address. There are also specific shortcuts in the app that are designed to protect your security. One is the No Malware shortcut, which blocks malware sites.

The Anti-Snooping shortcut blocks trackers and snoopers that may be following your activity online and a Safe Banking shortcut has a man-in-the-middle block. We're really impressed with the range of security and privacy features on offer and the ease with which subscribers can employ them.

However, despite the amount of personalization that ClearVPN offers, we noticed a lack of customization in the settings. Users cannot turn on IPv6 or DNS leak protection, as they can in some other apps. Furthermore, there is no kill switch feature to enable. A kill switch is a useful privacy and security feature since it automatically cuts out your internet access should your connection to the VPN server go down. It would be great to see ClearVPN develop an internet kill switch.

Overall, we are impressed with the level of security that ClearVPN provides. From a strict no-logs policy to advanced encryption, this provider is a great choice for any customers looking for a more secure internet experience. Since it is a MacPaw product, we also trust the quality of the technology.

ClearVPN Features

85%

ClearVPN is unique in the sense that it creates a more personalized VPN experience through its shortcuts. The app uses advanced technology to learn user habits and adjust the shortcuts to best suit each user's needs.

There is a range of shortcuts for different internet activities: streaming, banking, accessing social media sites, watching live sports, accessing streaming sites, and safe torrenting. Or you can choose a shortcut to surf the web safely and securely. The shortcuts work by each user selecting one on the app and letting ClearVPN do the rest of the work by connecting them to the best server in an optimized location.

The shortcuts are dynamic and frequently change to suit individual user needs and suit your location. For example, there is a Valentine's Day shortcut in February and a New Year's shortcut at the start of the year.

The innovative DynamicFlow technology connects users to the best possible server to minimize speed loss and decides the best protocol for a fast connection. However, if you want to change the region you're in, there is the option to select a country. ClearVPN connects you to a server in your country of choice.

ClearVPN has servers in around 20 countries and doesn't disclose the number of servers in its network. However, it has good location choices, which enable you to access a lot of restricted content around the world.

The server locations are especially great for streaming fans. The provider claims to access Netflix libraries in 6 countries and has specialized shortcut options to unblock specific Netflix catalogs. The provider also states it can unblock Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer.

Torrenting is permitted on the VPN, which is good to know, and Clear gives subscribers secure access to torrent platforms like BitTorrent. This is excellent since many VPNs don't support P2P networking.

Each subscription plan comes with 6 simultaneous connections, which is decent. There are dedicated apps for macOS, iOS, Android, and Windows, meaning that a friend or family member can use the 2 extra connections on their devices.

There is a free version of the VPN, which is not heavily advertised on the VPN's website. The free version is limited, but you can get a good sense of what services ClearVPN offers, and it is a great way to test out the VPN before upgrading to the Premium subscription.

On the app itself, there are some great features to improve your VPN experience. Firstly, recent shortcuts you have used appear on the Dashboard so that you can activate them again quickly. When you activate a shortcut, a timer appears, which shows you the length of time your VPN connection has been active.

There is also a feature that enables you to launch ClearVPN upon system startup, and which you can activate in the app settings. This is a great tool for people who may commonly forget to activate their VPN. It also ensures that you never surf the web or access your apps without VPN protection unless you choose to switch it off.

We also like the Quick Action tabs that are featured with every shortcut. These enable you to jump to another app on your device or carry out a specific action once you've activated a shortcut. This is a nice feature since it allows users to move between apps without too much effort.

We like the VPN's limited yet useful features. If you need a VPN for unblocking content online and want to use a service that is user-friendly and provides seamless ease of use, then ClearVPN is a great choice.

What is a VPN, and What Does it Do?

If you don’t currently use a VPN, then you should definitely start to do so. With a VPN connection, your browsing data is sent and received via an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server. By covering your web traffic with a layer of encryption, it is protected from snooping third parties such as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), hackers, and government agencies.

A VPN also gives you a more freeing internet experience. You can change your IP address and unblock restricted content in countries worldwide whilst hiding your online footprint.

VPN software is just as important as antivirus software, as it protects you from other online threats like trackers and gives you more internet privacy. A provider like ClearVPN is a great option for people who have never used VPNs before and may be unfamiliar with their services since it is an easy-to-use service.

Is ClearVPN Free?

ClearVPN offers a free version of its VPN service, which you can download from the provider’s website. The VPN provides access to only a few shortcuts, including Browse securely & privately, Anti-snooping, and No Malware.

When you upgrade to the premium plan you can enjoy more features. Premium customers can enjoy streaming and torrenting servers, choose a server location and enjoy a more personalized experience.

How Much is ClearVPN?

If you opt for the Premium version of the VPN, then you can choose from three subscription plans.

You get better value for money on the 24-month subscription plan. However, ClearVPN is still a bit more expensive than rivals such as Surfshark.

However, the provider offers great deals. If you own another MacPaw product, you get 30% off when you sign up for the VPN. There are deals on offer for loyal customers, so it is a good idea to check out other MacPaw products if you want to save some money.

You can pay via most major credit cards but currently, the company doesn’t accept cryptocurrency payments.

Is There a Refund Policy?

Yes! Like most other VPNs, ClearVPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee. However, if you purchase the VPN through the Apple Store or Google Play, the refund amount is dependent on the store’s refund policy.

What Platforms Does ClearVPN Support?

If you have a VPN, then you’ll want to use it on all of your devices. Support is available for macOS, iOS, Android, and Windows devices. Since MacPaw is known for creating apps for Apple devices, its macOS and iOS apps have fewer glitches and issues than the Windows and Android apps. However, we didn’t notice any irregularities when using the Windows client.

Is ClearVPN Easy to Use?

For this ClearVPN review, we tested the app to see how user-friendly and functional the VPN is. When we tested it, we used the Windows client. The installation process was quick and easy, and the client immediately opened up, suggesting that we enable the Launch on system startup feature.

The app itself is well-designed and aesthetically pleasing, with a stylish black and purple layout. The app opens up on the Dashboard page, showing recent activity and offering quick actions. ClearVPN’s personalization algorithm learns from your activity to offer personalized shortcuts.

You can connect to the best servers on the shortcuts tab depending on whether you want to stream Netflix in another country or need a secure connection for online banking. As a new user, you’ll get to grips with the layout in no time and enjoy navigating it since it offers exceptional ease of use.

Is ClearVPN Fast?

ClearVPN claims it is a high-speed VPN, so we had to put it to the test during our review. We tested the speed to see just how fast the provider is.

Our base speed was fast. We had a download speed of 19.6Mbps download speed, an upload speed of 3.71Mbps and our ping was 14ms.

We then activated the Browse securely and privately shortcut and were connected to a server in Ireland. Our speed test result showed that we dropped to a download speed of 11.7Mbps, an upload speed of 4.01Mbps, and a high ping rate at 28ms ping. This was quite a significant dip, and while our connection was fine, we noticed slower page loads on our desktop.

Activating the Anti-Snooping shortcut gave us a much better speed. We got a download speed of 17.7Mbps, an upload speed of 3.46Mbps, and a ping rate of 26ms.

Our speed tests demonstrate that the shortcut you choose definitely affects the speed you get. Streaming shortcuts are less secure but offer faster speeds, while privacy shortcuts need to protect your browsing data, so run over more secure protocols, which can often slow down your speed.

Does ClearVPN Work with Netflix?

If you want to unblock streaming sites, then ClearVPN is a good choice. The provider has 6 Netflix location options and gives users access to Netflix in the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, India, and Spain. That’s a decent number of libraries but doesn’t compare to Surfshark, which can unblock up to 15 Netflix libraries.

We tested the VPN, and sure enough, we could bypass the Netflix VPN firewall in the UK and the USA. We then tried out the VPN with HBO Max and were able to access that service too.

Unfortunately, we ran into a few issues with BBC iPlayer in the UK. This isn’t anything out of the ordinary since the British-based streaming service is notorious for its VPN block.

Does ClearVPN Allow Torrenting on its Network?

If you are a fan of P2P networking, then you need a VPN. Using a VPN will hide your data while you’re downloading and ensures your real IP address is hidden from other users on torrenting networks.

ClearVPN does indeed support torrenting, and you can torrent more safely online and easily connect to one of its torrenting-optimized servers via the appropriate shortcut. Not many VPNs permit torrenting, so it is great to see that subscribers can carry out this activity on the network.

Does ClearVPN Provide Customer Support?

Customer support is available with ClearVPN. There is a support center with FAQs and a small number of guides related to apps and connectivity. If you want to speak to a customer support agent, you won’t be able to since there is currently no live chat. However, there is a support contact form where you can send a message to the customer support team about a specific issue.

Who Owns ClearVPN?

MacPaw is the owner and creator of ClearVPN. MacPaw is a Ukrainian-based software company that creates software and applications for macOS devices. MacPaw offers other products, including Mac cleaning software, external drive cleaners, and an app to encrypt your files.

Where is ClearVPN Based?

ClearVPN is based in Ukraine. Ukraine has not yet implemented GDPR laws that allow people to restrict how their data is used. This is a little concerning; however, most businesses comply with GDPR in the country.

Is ClearVPN Safe?

VPNs have access to a lot of sensitive information such as user browsing data and personal details. For this reason, it is important to ensure they are safe. ClearVPN is a safe VPN since it has a zero-logs policy and uses the best encryption with secure tunneling protocols such as IPSec, IKEv2, and OpenVPN.

Data from ClearVPN servers is stored and processed in the USA, the UK, and Ireland. This may be worrisome for Five Eyes users, but since the provider doesn’t store sensitive data in the first place, it is not a cause for concern in our eyes.

ClearVPN hasn’t yet had its privacy policy audited by a third party, which would give customers more reassurance that it is a safe VPN. It would be great if the provider underwent an independent evaluation at some point in the future.

Is ClearVPN Worth it?

MacPaw is a reputable software company and has created a great VPN service with ClearVPN. While it is clear that the VPN is in the early stages of development and doesn’t offer as many features as some other VPNs, it provides great ease of use. Moreover, the provider uses the most advanced encryption to ensure that user data is protected and customers enjoy as much privacy as possible online.

The number of servers in ClearnVPN’s network is small, yet it is big enough to provide customers access to content worldwide. We also expect to see the number of servers grow over time.

During research for this review, we checked out some customer opinions of the VPN and found that overall customer satisfaction was high. One VPN review on the Google Play store even called it the “best VPN app ever!” While we wouldn’t go so far as to make that claim in this review, we are extremely impressed with the VPN.
